A Joyful Outing Turns Tragic
On the evening of July 4, 2024, what began as a celebratory outing on Casco Bay, Maine, took a devastating turn. Edward H. Berke, a 31-year-old hydrogeological consultant from New Haven, Connecticut, and native of Bow, New Hampshire, was enjoying the holiday with friends. The group had visited Chebeague Island for dinner and were en route to Spring Point Marina in South Portland aboard a 21-foot motor vessel named "Ternina," piloted by Berke's close friend, Benjamin Woodbury. As they navigated the waters near Clapboard Island around 7 p.m., the unthinkable happened: Berke was discovered missing from the boat. His friends, who had been seated at the bow, realized approximately 15 minutes later that he was no longer at the stern, where he had last been seen. They initially thought he had gone below deck, but upon discovering he was not on board, they alerted authorities.
Immediate Search and Rescue Efforts
The report of Berke's disappearance prompted a massive search and rescue operation. The U.S. Coast Guard, along with multiple state and local agencies, mobilized resources to scour the area. Assets included a lifeboat from South Portland, a Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod, and vessels from the Maine Marine Patrol, Portland Fire Department, and Falmouth Police Department. Despite extensive efforts covering nearly 350 square miles over approximately 30 hours, the only trace of Berke found was his flip-flops floating near Clapboard Island. The challenging conditions, including water temperatures around 59 degrees Fahrenheit, significantly reduced the likelihood of survival. On July 5, 2024, at 11 a.m., the Coast Guard made the difficult decision to suspend the active search, transitioning to a recovery operation led by the Maine Marine Patrol. ...Read More
