Janessa "Nessa" Hartley, born Janessa Hargroder on January 16, 1962, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was a beacon of warmth and generosity. As the fourth child of Lee and Jackie Hargroder, she grew up in a close-knit family and graduated from Redemptorist High School in 1980. In 1984, she married Peter Hartley, and together they raised three children: Jake, Megan, and Seth. Nessa dedicated nearly two decades to nurturing young minds as a preschool teacher at St. Thomas More, leaving an indelible mark on countless families. Upon retiring in 2014, she embraced her role as a full-time grandmother, cherishing every moment with her five grandchildren. Her infectious laughter, culinary delights, and unwavering love made her home a haven for all who knew her.
On the evening of January 15, 2019, just a day before her 57th birthday, Nessa's life was tragically cut short. After enjoying a celebratory dinner with her close friend Linda Donnelly, she was dropping Linda off at her fiancé's residence on Brookshire Avenue in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. Around 8:00 PM, as they sat in Nessa's Honda CR-V, a masked man emerged from the shadows, brandishing a firearm. Surveillance footage captured the assailant hiding behind a tree before approaching the vehicle. He attempted to open the driver's side door and, upon failing, fired a single shot through it, striking Nessa. Despite Linda's desperate efforts to reverse the vehicle and seek help, Nessa succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The Sherwood Forest community was left reeling from the senseless act of violence. Neighbors expressed shock and sorrow, struggling to comprehend the tragedy that had unfolded in their midst. Nessa's family and friends were devastated, grappling with the sudden loss of a woman known for her kindness and vivacity. Her friend Linda Donnelly, who witnessed the incident, described the harrowing experience and the profound impact it had on her life. The community rallied together, lighting candles and sharing memories, in a collective effort to honor Nessa's legacy and seek justice.
In the immediate aftermath, the Baton Rouge Police Department launched an intensive investigation. Detectives collected surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses, hoping to identify the perpetrator. Initially, authorities believed two suspects might be involved, but evidence submitted to the crime lab returned inconclusive results. Despite exhaustive efforts, the case grew cold, with no arrests made. By January 2021, police acknowledged they had exhausted all leads, leaving Nessa's family and the community without answers. ...Read More
