In early February 1977, 38-year-old Alvin Alfred Goodlataw, an Alaska Native man from Glennallen, embarked on what seemed to be a straightforward task. He was flown to a remote cabin near the upper Chitina River to care for horses. Equipped with horse feed, personal belongings, and provisions, Alvin was expected to manage the animals until the owner's return. However, when the owner flew back to check on him, Alvin was nowhere to be found. Despite extensive ground and air searches, no trace of him was ever discovered.

Alvin's life prior to his disappearance was marked by challenges. He had a history of alcohol abuse, which led to legal troubles.
