A Seeker’s Journey into the Alaskan Wilderness

In August 2018, Vladimir Petrovich Kostenko, a 41-year-old Russian immigrant residing in Walla Walla, Washington, embarked on a solitary expedition into the remote Purches Creek Valley on the western side of Hatcher Pass, Alaska. Known for his deep spiritual pursuits and minimalist lifestyle, Kostenko aimed to spend several months in a secluded 12-by-20-foot dry cabin, seeking enlightenment and understanding of life's purpose. He carried minimal supplies: a backpack, five pounds of oatmeal, an iPhone with a solar-powered charger, and no means of defense against the wilderness, such as a rifle or bear spray.  

Communication and the Last Known Sighting

Initially, Kostenko maintained contact with friends by sending text messages from elevated spots near the cabin to acquire cell service. In September, hunters visited the cabin and left fresh food, which he acknowledged. His last known communication was in late October 2018.
