A Routine Fishing Trip Turns Tragic

On October 26, 2018, Anthony Shelp, a 56-year-old fisherman and resident of Nome, Alaska, embarked on a fishing expedition aboard his vessel, the F/V JUDA LEE, accompanied by family members. Approximately seven miles off the coast of Nome, Shelp fell overboard into the frigid waters of the Bering Sea. Despite immediate rescue attempts by those on board, they were unable to retrieve him from the water. The incident was reported to the Alaska State Troopers, and the U.S. Coast Guard was alerted at approximately 10:45 a.m.

Immediate Search and Rescue Efforts

In response to the emergency, the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak to assist in the search. An urgent marine broadcast was issued to alert nearby mariners. The search operation covered a total of 41 square nautical miles over more than five hours. However, by 7 p.m., the search was suspended without locating Shelp.

Environmental Challenges and Safety Concerns

The search efforts were significantly hindered by challenging weather conditions, including 5-foot seas, 20 mph winds, an air temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and a water temperature of 43 degrees Fahrenheit. Notably, Shelp was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time he fell overboard, a factor that greatly reduced his chances of survival in the cold water. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Seth Caron emphasized the unforgiving nature of cold water and the critical importance of life jackets in such environments.

Official Records and Ongoing Status

Anthony Shelp's disappearance is officially recorded by the Alaska State Troopers under case number AK18077432. As of the latest update, he remains listed as a missing person. The case is managed by the Alaska State Troopers, with Malia Miller serving as the Missing Persons Clearinghouse Manager. ...Read More
