Gary Kergan, a 34-year-old businessman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was last seen on November 28, 1984. He co-owned a chain of Sonic Drive-In restaurants with his brother, Ted Kergan, and was known for his ambition and generosity. On the night of his disappearance, Gary left the Night Spot Lounge on Plank Road with Leila Mulla, a 19-year-old exotic dancer. He was carrying $2,000 in cash and wearing jewelry valued at $8,000. His brown Cadillac was later found abandoned in Metairie, Louisiana, with blood in the trunk, raising suspicions about foul play.
Authorities quickly identified Mulla and her boyfriend, Ronald Dunnagan, as suspects. Evidence found in their apartment, including entries in Mulla's diary as well as blood stains in Gary's car have indicated plans to murder Kergan, supported this suspicion. Despite their arrests, both were released three months later due to insufficient evidence and the absence of Kergan's body.
Ted Kergan, Gary's brother, refused to let the case go cold. Leveraging his connections as a commissioned deputy with the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Department, Ted embarked on a personal mission to find justice for Gary. His relentless pursuit spanned decades, during which he gathered information, tracked leads, and kept the case alive in the public eye.
In 2012, advancements in DNA technology provided the breakthrough needed. DNA testing confirmed that the blood found in Mulla and Dunnagan's apartment belonged to Gary Kergan. This new evidence led to the re-arrest of both suspects. Mulla, who had been living in New York City, and Dunnagan, residing in Bossier City, Louisiana, were charged with murder and other related offenses. ...Read More
