A Promising Young Life Cut Short

In the late hours of June 14, 2006, the vibrant community of Southwest Washington, D.C., was shaken by a senseless act of violence. Thirteen-year-old DeAngelo "Lil-D" Borras, a recent seventh-grade graduate with a bright future ahead, was gunned down in front of 120 Irvington Street, SW. The promising young life of DeAngelo was abruptly ended, leaving his family and community in mourning. Survived by his loving mother, Latonia Borras, father Robert H. Smith, Sr., nine siblings, and grandmother Girlie Smith, DeAngelo's untimely death left a void that words cannot fill. His grandmother, Emily J. Borras, had preceded him in death. A visitation and service were held on June 24, 2006, at Faith Presbyterian Church, where friends and family gathered to pay their respects and remember the young life taken too soon.

The Fateful Encounter

On that tragic night, just before midnight, DeAngelo stood in the courtyard of his apartment complex, engaged in conversation with his 32-year-old mentor, Terrell Davis. Concerned about DeAngelo's path, Davis took the time to counsel him, hoping to steer him in the right direction. Their conversation was abruptly interrupted when three young men walked by, casting menacing glares. Moments later, gunshots rang out.
