A Promising Life Cut Short

In the early hours of July 20, 2008, 15-year-old Jakeem Tully stood with friends outside a 24-hour store at 485 Albany Avenue in Hartford, Connecticut. The summer night was abruptly shattered when a vehicle passed by, and an occupant opened fire on the group. Jakeem was struck twice—once in the left bicep and once in the left side of his chest. Despite the immediate presence of a crowd, no one called the police. Instead, two passing men noticed Jakeem's dire condition, placed him in their car, and rushed him to St. Francis Hospital. Tragically, Jakeem succumbed to his injuries, marking the end of a young life filled with potential.

A History of Violence

This was not the first time Jakeem had faced gun violence. Just 16 days prior, on July 4, 2008, he was involved in another drive-by shooting near 274 Albany Avenue.
