The Fateful Kayaking Trip

On March 11, 2001, two close friends, 20-year-olds Braden Talbott Lindholdt and Jim Robinson, embarked on a kayaking adventure in Wildcat Cove near Bellingham Bay, Washington. Despite their inexperience with kayaking, the pair set out on a sunny Sunday afternoon, intending for a brief excursion close to the shore. Neither wore life jackets, as they anticipated a straightforward paddle. However, around 5 p.m., the weather abruptly changed; the wind intensified, and rain began to fall, creating challenging conditions for the novice kayakers. Tragically, both Braden and Jim were lost at sea that day, and despite extensive search efforts, their bodies were never recovered.

A Mother's Tribute

This rock, often referred to as "graffiti rock" or "Bellingham rock," has long served as a community canvas for messages of celebration, love, and remembrance. Each year, on the eve of March 11, the two mothers gather to paint the rock in memory of their sons. Gran explained, "We make it a celebration. We don't make it a sad thing. We have fun painting it each year and think our sons would think it was hilarious seeing us doing it." This annual act of remembrance has become a poignant way for the families to honor Braden and Jim, ensuring their spirits live on in the community's collective memory. ...Read More
