Their son, John Stewart Jr., recalls his parents' trusting nature, noting their habit of leaving doors unlocked and their unwavering belief in the goodness of people. The Tragic Discovery

On August 22, 1995, after a week of unanswered calls and uncollected mail, a family member visited the Stewarts' residence to check on them. Inside, they found John and Pansy deceased in the living room. Both had been shot multiple times, and the house showed signs of a thorough ransacking.
