A Dedicated Serviceman's Life

Born on August 16, 1971, in New London, Connecticut, Marc Jonathan Ficarra was a man committed to service and family. After graduating from Winter Park High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1990, dedicating 16 years to his country. Throughout his military career, Marc was known for his unwavering dedication, completing three tours in Iraq and preparing for a fourth deployment to the Middle East at the time of his death. He was a beloved husband to Myrna, a devoted father to his children, and a respected member of the 89th Civil Engineer Squadron. His family and colleagues remember him as a happy-go-lucky individual who always prioritized the well-being of those around him.

The Fateful Night in Adams Morgan

In the early hours of Saturday, January 21, 2006, Marc and a group of friends were in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Around 3 a.m., as they headed back to a parking garage on the 2300 block of 18th Street NW, an unsettling incident occurred. Three men approached the group, and one began harassing a woman accompanying Marc. Demonstrating his characteristic bravery, Marc intervened to defend her. In the ensuing confrontation, he was struck in the face, causing him to fall and sustain critical injuries.
