Arthur Angulo, age 55, was fatally assaulted in the early hours of September 16, 2017, in San Diego, California. He was sleeping in an alleyway in the North Park area, located near the 2800 block of El Cajon Boulevard, when he was attacked without apparent provocation by an unknown suspect carrying a skateboard. The attack occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. Angulo suffered major trauma to his upper body as a result of the beating and was subsequently taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital.
Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, his injuries were severe, and he was placed on life support, ultimately passing away on September 21 after being taken off life support.
The suspect was described as a white male in his late teens to early twenties, around six feet tall, wearing a dark shirt and grey shorts. The suspect was last seen fleeing the scene in a white sedan, possibly a Honda, and investigators believe he may have been a passenger in the vehicle. The attack was described as unprovoked, and no clear motive was identified. Detectives from the San Diego Police Department immediately launched an investigation, treating the incident as a homicide from the outset. They sought help from the public in identifying the suspect and offered a reward for information that could lead to an arrest.
This tragic incident highlights the vulnerability of the homeless population in San Diego, as Angulo was attacked while sleeping in a public space. The case drew attention to the need for greater safety measures and support for the homeless community, as well as the challenges that law enforcement faced in identifying the perpetrators of random acts of violence. Despite initial efforts to gather information, the case remained unsolved, with investigators urging anyone with knowledge of the suspect's whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers or the San Diego Police Department for further leads.
