On March 5, 2011, 18-year-old Edward Michael Townsend was shot and killed in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. The incident took place on a sidewalk, in an area that has struggled with violent crime. Townsend was found with multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The motive for the shooting was unclear, but the nature of the incident pointed to possible gang involvement, which was a prevalent issue in several Chicago neighborhoods at the time.
