Mandeep Badi, a 23-year-old University of Chicago graduate, was tragically killed on August 25, 2011, in what has been described as a road rage incident. Mandeep and his wife, Elizabeth, were driving near the university when an argument broke out with another driver after a traffic merge dispute. The altercation escalated when the other driver, a female in a silver car, got out of her vehicle and then re-entered it, deliberately reversing into Elizabeth and then driving forward over Mandeep, causing fatal injuries. Elizabeth sustained minor injuries, but Mandeep was completely run over, leading to his death a week later due to the injuries sustained in the incident. The driver responsible fled the scene, and her identity remained unknown at the time of the incident, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Chicago Police Department.
Mandeep's death deeply affected the University of Chicago community. He had graduated in 2010 with a degree in anthropology and worked as a sales intern at the university's IT Services Solutions Center. His memorial was a reflection of his colorful life and contributions to the community. Elizabeth, along with friends and family, commemorated his memory by creating a graffiti wall in his honor on Bartlett Quad, a tribute to Mandeep's passion for graffiti art, which had been the subject of his senior thesis. The wall was adorned with images and messages, including the logo of his favorite soccer team and his personal motto, "B.E.Z.," which stood for "be easy."
A memorial service was held at Rockefeller Chapel, attended by around 150 people who wore white and bright-colored clothing, in keeping with Sikh funeral traditions. Elizabeth spoke about her life with Mandeep, highlighting their brief yet happy time together, while friends and family shared their memories of his vibrant personality and caring nature. Despite the tragic circumstances, the event focused on celebrating Mandeep's life, his interests, and the positive impact he made on those around him.
