Charles Robinson III, a 39 year old Black man, was standing on a South Shore sidewalk with a 59-year-old acquaintance when gunfire cracked through the quiet of the 7500 block of South Kingston Avenue. The shots came without warning. Robinson was struck in the face; the older man was hit in the leg.
Neighbors woke to sirens as officers and paramedics converged on the block. Robinson was rushed to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, while the second victim was driven by a friend to South Shore Hospital and listed in good condition. Police recorded the time as 12:05 a.m., another killing entered into a city ledger already thick with grief.
He was identified by the Cook County medical examiner's office as Louis L.C. Charles Robinson III, of the 100 block of East 150th Street in Harvey. In the half-lit minutes before the shooting, he had simply been talking with a neighbor; moments later, the sidewalk was cordoned off, the block washed in blue lights.
