Freddy, who had previously been involved with gangs, had worked hard to change his life, leaving behind his previous affiliations and participating in rehabilitation programs. Despite his efforts to reform, he fell victim to violence that he had been trying to escape.
He was killed by multiple gunshots on Trumbull Street, marking another tragic loss in the city's ongoing struggle with gang-related homicides.
Freddy's mother, Luz Hernandez, spoke about the hardships her son faced and how the absence of his father during his childhood contributed to his vulnerability and involvement with gangs. She shared how Freddy had once been a joyful child who loved music, particularly the violin, and excelled in school. However, the disruption of his family life after his father left when Freddy was eight years old deeply affected him, leading to declining school performance and eventually his involvement in gang activities.
Luz Hernandez highlighted how Freddy's tragic story is one that speaks to the many challenges faced by young people in environments impacted by violence and lack of support. She has since dedicated herself to helping others through a group she founded called "Padres Angeles," which aims to support families and prevent violence by promoting love and strong relationships among community members. She emphasizes the importance of forgiveness and the need to address the underlying issues that lead young people to gangs, with hopes that no other mother has to face the pain of losing a child to violence.
