Rey Dorantes, a 14-year-old boy, was killed on January 11, 2013, in Chicago, Illinois. Rey was sitting on the front porch of his home when he was shot six times. The shooting occurred while he was reportedly talking on his phone, a seemingly ordinary activity that ended in a tragic loss of young life. His death marked the 21st homicide in Chicago for 2013, highlighting the persistently high levels of gun violence in the city, which had also seen over 500 homicides in the previous year.
