Cortez Bailey, a 23-year-old resident of Chicago, was fatally shot on June 26, 2013, in the South Shore neighborhood. The incident took place in broad daylight on the 7500 block of Yates Boulevard, which drew considerable attention due to its brazenness and the apparent lack of intervention from those in the area. Cortez was shot in the chest and succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward, marking yet another life lost to Chicago's pervasive gun violence problem at the time.
