On December 25, 2013, Silvestre Diaz, age 41, was brutally murdered in a shocking incident in Chicago, Illinois. The crime occurred on the 2500 block of North Kildare Avenue in the Hermosa neighborhood, where Diaz was living with his girlfriend and her nephew, Alexis Valdez, who was 18 years old at the time. Valdez had been staying with them under the condition that he attend school and help with household expenses. When Valdez stopped contributing and his aunt asked him to move out, Valdez instead decided to exact revenge in a horrifying manner.
The events leading up to the crime started on Christmas Eve when Valdez began drinking and went out with Diaz to buy more alcohol. Before leaving the apartment, Valdez hid a hammer to use as a weapon upon their return. After coming back, Valdez attacked Diaz, hitting him in the head multiple times with the hammer until Diaz fell to the floor and died. Valdez then dismembered Diaz’s body in a shocking act of brutality. He cut off Diaz's head, ears, nose, and even pulled out his eyes, ultimately placing these parts on Diaz’s bed as a "present" for his aunt.
Valdez later called 911 to report the crime, laughing as he informed the dispatcher that the victim had been decapitated. When police arrived at the scene, they found Valdez covered in blood, and he confessed to the killing. Authorities also reported that Valdez had expressed intentions to kill his aunt if she had been present, as he was also angry with her for asking him to move out. Valdez was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was held without bond, and the case served as a grim reminder of the impact of unresolved domestic conflicts and mental health issues in exacerbating violence within homes.
