On April 23, 2021, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 35-year-old Miguel Gonzales-Muñoz was fatally shot while driving east on Bridge Boulevard near Old Coors. The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. when another driver, later identified as 22-year-old Ruben Sanchez, fired multiple shots at Gonzales-Muñoz's vehicle. After being struck several times, Gonzales-Muñoz lost control of his car, crashing into the yard of a residence at 2313 Bridge.
He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Initially, Sanchez was charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. However, following Gonzales-Muñoz's death, the charges were elevated to an open count of murder and shooting at a motor vehicle. Investigators determined that the shooting stemmed from a confrontation between the two drivers. According to reports, Gonzales-Muñoz had allegedly backed into Sanchez's car near Bridge Boulevard and Atrisco Drive, leading to an argument during which Sanchez fired the fatal shots.
In March 2023, Sanchez accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and shooting at a motor vehicle. As a result, he was sentenced to six years in prison. The case highlights the dangers of road rage incidents escalating to violence, underscoring the importance of de-escalation and restraint in confrontational situations.
