Marcus Cox, aged 27, was fatally shot on September 27, 2015, in the Longwood Manor neighborhood of Chicago's South Side. He was standing outside on the 9600 block of South Morgan Avenue at around 4:20 a.m. when he was shot multiple times, including in the abdomen and ankle. He was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he succumbed to his injuries later that day.
Witnesses at the scene reported that Marcus may have been the victim of a robbery, as his wallet and car keys were missing when authorities arrived.
Marcus Cox was a well-loved member of the community, known for his work as a display cook at Bartlett Dining Commons since 2011. His colleagues described him as generous, optimistic, and always ready to celebrate others’ milestones. His personality endeared him to many, as he was often the life of the party, known for bringing joy and humor to any gathering. Colleagues like Tony Evans and Dwight McGee shared that Marcus attended family events of co-workers, always making an effort to support others. Evans recalled Marcus attending his wife’s baby shower and bringing a stack of dollar bills to compensate for forgetting a gift.
Beyond his work, Marcus had various passions. He enjoyed cooking, playing sports, visiting clubs, and video games like Madden and NBA 2K. He was known for his love of desserts, often indulging in cakes and other sweets. Family members, including his cousin Cleveland Wilson, expressed their grief and shared memories of Marcus’s off-duty interests, emphasizing how his untimely death left a gap in their lives.
Despite the ongoing investigation by the Chicago Police Department, no suspects have been identified as of yet. The incident remains under investigation, and Marcus's death serves as a tragic reminder of the persistent violence affecting Chicago's neighborhoods, where even well-loved community figures can become victims of senseless acts of violence. His funeral services were held at Leak and Sons Funeral Chapel, where family and friends gathered to remember his bright spirit and deep connections with those around him.
