In the early hours of August 14, 2021, Edgar Matthews, a 39-year-old Black/African American male from Mattapan, was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 3:18 a.m. in the vicinity of 37 Almont Street in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Matthews suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the location of the shooting.
Known to his friends and family as "Eddie," Matthews was a lifelong resident of
Mattapan. He was remembered as a mentor who had a natural ability to connect with children and young people. In his youth, he was a member of the Boys and Girls Club in Roxbury. He was a man of faith, associated with the Union Baptist Church in Cambridge and later attending the True Vine Church in Dorchester. Those who knew him described him as having a deep sense of fairness and a non-judgmental nature. He was a father of two children, Eddie and Sanye. In the months leading up to his death, he had started a T-shirt company and was planning to resume his work as a pharmacy technician.
The Boston Police Department publicly identified Matthews as the victim of the homicide and asked for anyone with information to contact the Homicide Detectives. The investigation into his death was reported as ongoing. However, public records and news reports have not released any information regarding any arrests that have been made in connection with the shooting, nor have any suspects been publicly identified. The circumstances that led to the fatal shooting remain unclear, and the case is still seeking resolution.
