On the evening of April 8, 2022, the life of 23-year-old Dreshaun Johnson, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire at an Alfa gas station on Washington Street in the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Johnson was a passenger in a car with friends when the driver noticed they were being followed. Seeking a well-lit area, they pulled into the gas station. As Johnson attempted to exit the vehicle and flee, he was fatally shot in the head.
Another individual with him was also shot but survived with non-life-threatening injuries. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of his death, Johnson was actively seeking to improve his life. He had a promising interview with AutoZone just the day before he was killed and was looking for work in construction. His family remembers him as a "happy-go-lucky guy" who loved sports, especially basketball, and enjoyed making music and spending time with his loved ones. Though he had a past arrest for a gun and drug violation, his sister maintained that the experience had strengthened his resolve to turn his life around and stay out of jail. She firmly stated that her brother was not a "gangbanger" and had never seriously harmed anyone.
The motive for the shooting is believed by his family to be connected to a feud between two groups over a local music video. His sister explained that while Johnson was friends with some of the individuals involved in the dispute, she does not believe he was a part of the conflict himself, suggesting he was tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was a beloved son, brother, and uncle who was also an expecting father.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Boston Police Department launched an investigation, interviewing several witnesses who were present at the gas station. Authorities stated they did not believe the shooting was a random act. However, despite these efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Dreshaun Johnson, and police are still searching for the person or persons responsible for his death. His family continues to plead for anyone with information to come forward to bring justice for Dreshaun.
