On the morning of July 14, 1998, a person searching for cans and bottles along a path in Powers Marine Park near SW Macadam Ave in Portland, Oregon, made a grim discovery. A trail of blood on the path led to the discarded body of a woman. The individual immediately contacted the police, who responded to the scene and confirmed the woman was deceased.
An autopsy later revealed that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.
Using fingerprints, detectives identified the victim as Cassie Nadeen Stevens, a 35-year-old white female. Investigators learned that she was originally from the Seattle area and had only recently arrived in Portland's Old Town neighborhood. Standing 5'8" and weighing 120 pounds, Cassie was described by her family as someone who struggled with a crack cocaine addiction and was trying to support her habit.
The investigation into her death revealed that Cassie was last seen alive in the early morning hours, between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., on the day her body was found. She was in the Old Town area at that time. Her case remains an unsolved homicide, and investigators have sought information from the public over the years. Authorities have expressed interest in speaking with anyone who may have heard someone talk about "dumping" a body around that time or noticed unexplained blood on a person, their clothing, or in their vehicle. The case is now considered a cold case, and no arrests have been made, nor have any suspects been publicly identified.
