On February 17, 2016, 23-year-old Iaron Brooks was found dead in Avalon Park on Chicago's South Side. Brooks had been reported missing since Christmas Eve 2015, and his body was discovered after a lengthy search that involved multiple locations. He was killed by multiple gunshot wounds, and the death was ruled a homicide.
Brooks’ death highlighted the ongoing struggles with gun violence in Chicago during that time. Despite community and law enforcement efforts, many areas, including Avalon Park, experienced high rates of violent crime that year, contributing to the city's spike in homicides.
