On a summer Sunday afternoon, July 27, 2008, the life of 27-year-old Lacrissa Davis was tragically cut short in Ames, Iowa. A female, she was working at a Casey's convenience store when she was fatally shot. The incident prompted a swift police response, with officers arriving at the store just before 4:30 PM to find her deceased inside. The tragic event was not a random act of violence; the suspect was identified as Tony Hayes, a man with whom Davis had been in a relationship.
Immediately following the shooting, Hayes fled the scene on foot. He was later spotted near the town of Nevada, where a local police officer confronted him. An exchange of gunfire ensued, during which Hayes managed to steal the officer's patrol car and flee. This initiated a high-speed chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies along Highway 30. To bring the pursuit to an end, officers deployed tire-deflation devices, which successfully forced the stolen police car into a ditch near State Center.
Upon approaching the vehicle, law enforcement discovered Hayes deceased inside from what was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It was confirmed that officers had not fired upon him after the car had gone into the ditch. The investigation revealed that Davis was a victim of domestic violence, a fact her mother, Lynetta Hall-Parrott, later spoke about publicly. Hall-Parrott shared that she was unaware of the abusive nature of her daughter's relationship with Hayes at the time. Lacrissa Davis was a mother to four children, who were 12, 10, 9, and 4 years old at the time of her death.
