Korry Rogers, a 19-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on September 4, 2016, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. near 52nd and Sangamon, following an argument between Rogers and another individual, Malik Williams. Witnesses reported that the dispute involved pushing and shoving before Williams, 22 years old at the time, pulled out a semi-automatic handgun with an extended clip from his waistband.
Rogers, who was unarmed, attempted to flee, but Williams opened fire, striking him in the back. After Rogers collapsed, Williams approached and fired multiple shots at close range before fleeing through a nearby gangway.
Rogers sustained six gunshot wounds, including injuries to his upper back, rear upper right leg, buttocks, back of the head, and back of the neck. Eight. 40-caliber shell casings were recovered near his body. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Rogers was a resident of the West Englewood neighborhood.
Authorities identified Williams as the suspect based on multiple witness accounts. A warrant for his arrest was issued on September 24, 2016. Investigators later discovered that Williams had left Chicago after the murder and was arrested in Ohio on unrelated gun charges. On October 10, 2017, Chicago detectives traveled to Ohio to take Williams into custody and return him to Chicago. He was charged with first-degree murder and ordered to be held without bond at the Cook County Jail. His next court appearance was scheduled for October 31, 2017.
