On May 14, 1911, at approximately 3:30 a.m., 22-year-old Patrolman George D. Smith of the Paragould Police Department in Arkansas observed a suspicious individual walking along a city street. Smith began to follow the man, who proceeded to the Post Office located at 118 West Emerson Street. As the suspect neared the building, he vanished from sight.
