Arturo A. Zizumbo, 47, a Hispanic/Latino man, was walking with three teenagers in Chicago's Brighton Park on the afternoon of December 16, 2016, when a silver vehicle rolled up to the mouth of an alley in the 4300 block of South Rockwell Street. Two people stepped out and opened fire. Zizumbo was struck multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene minutes later, at 3:40 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner. Torres, also suffered fatal wounds, while the other two—an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old—were rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital with serious and critical injuries. Police later said the three younger victims were documented gang members, underscoring how quickly a walk down the block became a burst of chaos that left neighbors counting shots and first responders working under sirens.
As detectives processed the scene, loved ones began to gather behind yellow tape. A young woman cried out toward officers, and a crisis responder arrived as daylight faded, all of it happening on a stretch of Rockwell where gunfire had crackled less than two hours after another multi-victim shooting elsewhere in the city. Zizumbo, who lived nearby on South Maplewood, was identified within hours. Police said the attackers were two unknown offenders who got out of a silver car before firing on the group; news reports in the aftermath did not announce arrests.
