On a tragic afternoon in Phoenix, Arizona, on November 12, 2013, the life of 51-year-old Caucasian female Carol Fitzpatrick Sanders was violently cut short in a horrific act of domestic violence. The events that unfolded that day also claimed the lives of her 14-year-old daughter, Audrey Sanders, and her 49-year-old brother, Tom Fitzpatrick, at the hands of her estranged husband, 53-year-old Michael Sanders.
The devastating incident occurred at the family's home near 51st Street and
Thunderbird Road. Carol had recently moved out of the residence and had obtained a protective order against her husband, with whom she was undergoing a divorce. On that fateful Tuesday, she returned to the house, accompanied by her daughter and brother, to gather her personal belongings. Michael was supposed to have vacated the premises during this time, but he instead returned and orchestrated a deadly ambush.
Michael's violent rampage began when he encountered his brother-in-law, Tom Fitzpatrick, who was waiting in his truck in the driveway. Michael fatally shot him before proceeding into the garage, where he confronted Carol and their daughter, Audrey. After closing the garage door, he shot them both. In a final, gruesome act, Michael dragged Carol's body into the backyard and set it on fire before fleeing the scene.
Neighbors, alarmed by the sound of gunshots, contacted the police around 4 p.m. When officers arrived, they discovered the horrific scene.
