Raymond Myles, a 66-year-old Cook County Associate Judge, was shot and killed on April 10, 2017, outside his home on Chicago’s South Side. The incident occurred around 4:10 a.m. when Myles responded to a commotion involving his female companion, who had been shot in the leg during an attempted robbery. The judge confronted the assailant and was subsequently shot multiple times on his porch.
Both Myles and the injured woman were taken to Advocate Christ Hospital, where Myles was pronounced dead.
The motive for the shooting was reportedly a "targeted robbery" directed at the judge’s companion. Two individuals were involved in the crime. Earl Wilson, identified as the shooter, was charged with first-degree murder, while Joshua Smith, who acted as the getaway driver, was also charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and obstruction. Both men had prior criminal records; Wilson had previously served 12 years of an 18-year sentence for attempted murder and had multiple encounters with law enforcement following his release.
The incident highlighted the ongoing struggle with gun violence in Chicago and the dangers faced even by those within the judicial system. Myles, who had served in the criminal division since 2009, was known for his fair but firm rulings. The tragic loss drew condolences from colleagues, including Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy Evans, who praised Myles for his dedication to justice and his extensive service to the community.
