On March 11, 2023, at approximately 12:53 a.m., 23-year-old Oakland resident Paris Moffett was fatally shot in his bed at Lake Merritt Healthcare Center, a long-term care facility in Oakland's Adams Point neighborhood. Moffett had been recovering there after a previous shooting in September 2022 had left him partially paralyzed.
In the earlier incident, Moffett and 40-year-old Dominique Miles of San Francisco were attacked in a drive-by shooting on September 8, 2022, in the 300 block
of 27th Street in Oakland. Both men had just left a wake for a mutual acquaintance when a vehicle drove by, and an occupant opened fire. Miles succumbed to his injuries at a hospital, while Moffett, despite being shot multiple times, managed to transport himself to a hospital for treatment. This attack resulted in Moffett's partial paralysis.
While recuperating at Lake Merritt Healthcare Center, Moffett was attacked again. Two men entered the facility through an unlocked back door, proceeded to Moffett's room, and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene. No other patients or staff were harmed during the incident. Authorities have indicated that this was a targeted attack, though the exact motive remains under investigation.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with either the September 2022 shooting or Moffett's subsequent murder in March 2023. The Oakland Police Department and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering rewards of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspects involved in these cases. Community members with relevant information are urged to contact the authorities to assist in solving these crimes.
