In the spring of 2024, the life of 49-year-old Nicole 'Nikki Boo' Stewart Fanney was brought to a tragic and violent end in her West Knoxville, Tennessee, apartment. On the evening of April 25th, officers from the Knoxville Police Department were dispatched to a residence on Atchley Ridge Way following a report of a deceased person. Inside, they discovered Fanney, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the female victim's
death quickly pointed to a domestic incident. Authorities identified 49-year-old Michael Merrick as a suspect. Merrick, who was in a relationship with Fanney and shared the apartment, had fled the scene before police arrived. Later that same night, law enforcement in Whitley County, Kentucky, apprehended Merrick on a charge of driving under the influence after responding to a call about a vehicle in a ditch. It was soon discovered that he was wanted in connection with Fanney's death.
A warrant was issued for Merrick's arrest, charging him with second-degree murder. He was held at the Whitley County Detention Center before being extradited back to Knoxville to face the charges against him. In the months that followed, the legal process moved forward. By September 2024, court documents revealed that Merrick had been indicted on charges of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Prosecutors presented evidence that an argument between Merrick and Fanney preceded the fatal shooting, during which he shot her 13 times. In a subsequent court hearing, Michael Merrick was sentenced for his role in the death of his girlfriend. He was ordered to serve 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had cut short the life of a woman remembered by her loved ones as a devoted mother and grandmother.
