On November 26, 2023, a tragic incident occurred near Autryville, North Carolina, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including 41-year-old Carrie Nichole Trampel. The Sampson County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire at a homeless encampment located at the end of Tanner Lane. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the bodies of two men and two women near two tents in a wooded area. Three of the deceased had multiple gunshot wounds, while one appeared to have a single gunshot wound.
The victims were identified as Daniel Jay Wiltshire, 44; Amber Rae King, 43; and Carrie Nichole Trampel, 41, all from Autryville. The deceased suspect was identified as 40-year-old Dwane Paul Miller from Marysville, Washington. Preliminary investigations revealed that Miller and Trampel had ongoing domestic violence issues originating from another state. Evidence at the scene indicated that all four individuals had been residing in the tents for several weeks.
Neighbors reported hearing a verbal altercation prior to the gunshots. Authorities concluded that Miller discharged his firearm multiple times, killing Wiltshire, King, and Trampel, before turning the gun on himself. The Sampson County Sheriff's Office stated that there was no apparent danger to the public following the incident.
Carrie Trampel was born on December 5, 1981, in Buncombe County. She was the daughter of the late Alan Kirby Greene and Barbara Wiltshire Greene. She is survived by her children, Christian Greene, Isabelle Cabarrus, Michaela Key, and Addison Bova; her mother, Barbara Wiltshire Greene; siblings, Jeremy Greene and Kimberly Dahl; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on December 3, 2023, at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Clinton, North Carolina.
