On a Saturday evening in Bassfield, Mississippi, a long-standing feud culminated in the tragic death of 36-year-old Johnny Jemaine Reese. The fatal encounter occurred on February 25, 2023, just outside a local barbershop on Washington Avenue. Reese, a resident of Carson, was a father of five who was known for his love of animals and the brand he built, 'Dirty Money'.
He was remembered by his family as someone who treated people the way he wanted to be treated.
That evening, Reese crossed paths with 26-year-old Antwan Loftin, with whom he had a history of arguments and disagreements. An altercation broke out between the two men, and Loftin discharged a 12-gauge shotgun, striking Reese in the right shoulder. A family member rushed Reese to Jefferson Davis Community Hospital around 8 p.m., but he was pronounced deceased upon arrival.
Following the shooting, law enforcement received a tip that pointed to Loftin as the primary suspect. He was apprehended later that evening at a residence off Morgan Lane and was initially charged with murder. However, after further investigation, authorities determined that the incident lacked malice, and the charge was subsequently downgraded to manslaughter. A Justice Court Judge set Loftin's bond at $300,000, and he remained in the Jefferson Davis County jail. The case was set to go before a Jefferson Davis County grand jury.
