In the quiet, early morning hours of Friday, September 13, 2024, the small town of Summit, Mississippi, was disturbed by an act of violence that claimed the life of 19-year-old Jeremiah Lloyd. An African American male, Lloyd was at an apartment complex located at 900 Cherry Street when gunfire erupted at approximately 2 a.m. The shooting was described by Summit's police chief, Alex Miller, as a drive-by.
Jeremiah Lloyd was not the only person struck by the hail of bullets.
Two other teenagers, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, were also wounded in the attack. The 15-year-old sustained a graze wound, while the 17-year-old's injuries were more significant. First responders arrived at the scene, and Lloyd was transported by ambulance to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The two other victims of the shooting survived the incident.
In the wake of the shooting, the Summit community was left shaken by the sudden violence. Police Chief Alex Miller made a public appeal for assistance, urging any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward to aid in the investigation. As of the initial reports, no motive for the shooting had been established, and law enforcement had not identified any suspects. The investigation into the death of Jeremiah Lloyd is ongoing, and as of yet, no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The community has shown its support for the grieving family, including the creation of a GoFundMe campaign to assist with expenses following the tragedy.
