In the summer of 2023, a vibrant life was tragically cut short in Saginaw, Michigan. Pamela Denise 'Jenko' Whitson, a 51-year-old Black/African American female, was killed on June 24th during a chaotic and unauthorized street gathering. Remembered as the life of the party, a loving mother to two sons, and an entrepreneur who owned her own cleaning service, Whitson's death sent shockwaves through her community.
She was a graduate of Saginaw High School and had been a dedicated employee within the Saginaw Public Schools system in various roles, as well as at General Motors for a number of years. Her warm presence was also felt at Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church, where she was an active member.
The night Pamela Whitson died, she was one of an estimated 500 people attending an event dubbed 'Freaknik 23.' The gathering, which had been dispersed by law enforcement multiple times only to reconvene in different locations, ended in a hail of gunfire near the intersection of Johnson and Fourth streets. The sheer violence of the incident was underscored by the evidence left behind: shell casings from five different firearms littered the scene, a grim testament to the presence of multiple shooters. In the aftermath, another young life, that of 19-year-old Ryan Clemons, was also extinguished, and thirteen other individuals were left with injuries.
The community reeled from the tragedy, with local clergy and civic leaders quickly organizing a forum at Bethel AME Church to address the devastating impact of gun violence. Over 100 people gathered, their collective grief and a shared resolve to create a safer environment palpable in the room. Despite the public outcry and the ongoing investigation by the Saginaw Police Department, the individuals responsible for the gunfire that ended Pamela Whitson's life remain at large. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, leaving a community to mourn and await justice for a woman known for her infectious jokes and unwavering love for her family and friends.
