In the quiet town of Wapato, Washington, a tragic event unfolded on October 22, 2023, ending the life of 74-year-old White / Caucasian female, Olivia Lucille Lawrence. Born in nearby Toppenish, she had been a lifelong resident of the area and was an active member of her community and the First Baptist Church of Wapato. A graduate of Wapato High School's class of 1967, she married Donald LeRoy Lawrence that same year, and they built a life together spanning 57 years, raising three daughters.
For 37 years, she worked as a professional hairdresser and was a beloved grandmother to six grandchildren.
The circumstances of her death involved a shooting. Her husband, then 80-year-old Donald Lawrence, was arrested in connection with the incident. He was booked on suspicion of manslaughter. According to his account to sheriff's deputies, he and his wife were arguing when she allegedly took a handgun from a drawer and threatened to kill herself. He claimed that he then took the gun, unloaded it, and, believing it to be empty, pointed it at her and pulled the trigger. The gun discharged, fatally wounding his wife.
In the months following the incident, the legal proceedings against Donald Lawrence took an unexpected turn. He was initially charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter. However, in June 2024, the charges were dismissed. Prosecutors noted that they could refile the charges in the future if more evidence comes to light. At the time the charges were dropped, Donald Lawrence had been out of jail on pre-trial release since his initial court appearance.
