On January 25, 2023, Rachel Miranda, a 42-year-old Caucasian woman, was found deceased in a Las Cruces, New Mexico apartment. Police responded to a call about a gunshot victim at a residence located at 416 East Lucero Avenue and discovered Miranda with a gunshot wound to her head.
Leading up to the discovery, neighbors reported hearing an argument between Miranda and her boyfriend, David Aguilar. The argument was followed by sounds of a physical altercation and a loud banging noise.
Inside the apartment, investigators found a black 12-gauge shotgun.
Two men, David Aguilar and Margarito Serena, were arrested in connection with Miranda's death after they fled the scene before the arrival of law enforcement. They were later apprehended north of Spruce Avenue and Mesquite Drive. It was revealed that both men were convicted felons and were legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. On February 13, 2023, a grand jury indicted Margarito Serena on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
