On September 3, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Chicago Heights, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of David Parra, 30, and Antonio Muñoz, 32. The incident began early in the morning when a dispute erupted between the victims and their neighbors from across West 14th Street. According to family members, the neighbors had come over and threatened violence, prompting Parra to grab a gun and chase them away. However, the neighbors returned, leading to a confrontation that ended in gunfire.
At around 4 a.m., officers from the Chicago Heights Police Department responded to multiple calls of shots fired in the 500 block of West 14th Place. Upon arrival, they found Parra and Muñoz with gunshot wounds. Both men were transported to the hospital by the Chicago Heights Fire Department, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
The family of the victims described the incident in detail, with Crystal Chavez, Parra's wife, stating that the neighbors had approached their cousin's car and initiated a fight. The family was planning to spend the day celebrating Parra and Chavez's sixth wedding anniversary, but instead, they found themselves grieving the loss of their loved ones.
Following the shooting, police requested assistance from neighboring communities, the South Suburban Emergency Response Team, and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force due to several subjects being observed in the area. The incident was under investigation, and authorities stated there was no ongoing threat to the community.
As a result of the investigation, three men were charged in connection with the shootings. Alexis Mendoza, 19, and Adrian Romo-Trejo, 24, were charged with first-degree murder and are being held without bond. Jesus Mendoza, 43, was charged with aggravated battery and had his bond set at $100,000, with $10,000 needed for release. All three were scheduled to appear in court on September 20, 2023.
