Fritz Severe, a 45-year-old homeless man, was shot and killed by a Miami police officer on June 11, 2015, in Miami, Florida. The incident occurred near Gibson Park, close to the Culmer/Overtown Branch Library, where Fritz was reportedly holding a three-foot-long metal pipe. The police were called by a park worker who expressed concern about Severe potentially bothering children attending a nearby summer camp. Officer Antonio Torres, a 20-year veteran of the Miami Police Department, responded to the call along with a rookie officer he was training.
Upon arrival, Torres confronted Severe and ordered him to drop the metal pipe. According to police accounts, Severe did not comply, which led the officer to fire multiple shots, ultimately hitting Severe several times.
