A tragic incident at a family reunion in the Free Hope community near Magnolia, Arkansas, ended the life of Craig Lovell Phillips Jr., a 31-year-old man, on Friday, August 18, 2023. Phillips, who was visiting from Fayetteville, North Carolina, was fatally shot during a disturbance at the gathering. He was pronounced dead at Magnolia Regional Medical Center.
Details that emerged following the event suggest that Phillips was an innocent bystander who was mortally wounded while attempting
to shield children from harm. Witnesses reported that when a gun was drawn during an argument, Phillips ran towards his children to protect them. The shooting reportedly stemmed from an argument between Alando Rodreges Caldwell and another individual, Kawavin Jamerson, at the family reunion held at the Free Hope Community Center.
In the aftermath of the shooting, 42-year-old Alando Rodreges Caldwell of Magnolia was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The investigation was handled by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office with assistance from the Arkansas State Police.
However, the legal proceedings took a significant turn in December 2024. After a trial, a jury deliberated for approximately three and a half hours before finding Alando Caldwell not guilty of the first-degree murder charge. Caldwell's defense attorney argued that the shooting was an act of self-defense and that Craig Phillips Jr.'s death was accidental. Following the verdict, Caldwell was acquitted.
