In the quiet town of Enoch, Utah, a devastating tragedy unfolded on January 4, 2023, forever altering the community. Among the victims was Ammon Haight, a 7-year-old Caucasian male, who, along with his family, fell victim to a horrific act of violence.
The events of that day were set in motion by Ammon's father, 42-year-old Michael Haight. In the days leading up to the incident, Michael's wife and Ammon's mother, 40-year-old Tausha Haight, had taken the courageous step of filing for
divorce. This action appears to have been a catalyst for Michael's subsequent actions. On that fateful day, Michael systematically shot and killed Tausha, her 78-year-old mother Gail Earl, and his and Tausha's five children. The children, in addition to Ammon, were his twin sister Sienna, age 7, his sisters Macie, 17, and Briley, 12, and his 4-year-old brother Gavin. After murdering his family, Michael then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life.
The grim discovery was made by police officers who were conducting a welfare check at the family's home after Tausha missed an appointment. Upon entering the residence, they found a scene of unimaginable horror. The bodies of the family members were found in different parts of the house; some of the children were discovered in their beds. Each of the victims, including young Ammon, had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The subsequent investigation confirmed that Michael Haight was the sole perpetrator of the killings, and as such, no arrests were made. The incident was officially classified as a murder-suicide.
Further investigation into the family's history revealed a pattern of troubling behavior from Michael Haight. Two years prior to the killings, he had been investigated for child abuse, though no criminal charges were filed at the time. His actions in the days before the tragedy, including removing firearms from the home, painted a picture of a man who was meticulously planning his final, devastating act.
