In the quiet town of Blanding, Utah, the lives of 28-year-old Christopher "Topher" Owens and his friend, William "Drew" Bull, 29, were cut tragically short in late February 2024. The two men, who were roommates with their landlord, 35-year-old Charles Youngkuom Yoo, were last seen on February 25, 2024. Concern mounted when friends and family were unable to contact either man, a departure from their usual habits of frequent social media use and communication.
The unsettling silence was
broken by a suspicious text message sent from Bull's phone to his girlfriend on February 27. The message, which misspelled the name of Bull's ex-wife with whom he hadn't spoken in years, raised immediate red flags. It also contained a chilling reference to Owens, hinting that he might not be alive. This alarming communication, later determined to have been sent from the vicinity of their shared residence, intensified the investigation. At the time the text was sent, Yoo was the only person confirmed to be at the house.
As the San Juan County Sheriff's Office delved into the disappearances, the case quickly transitioned from a missing persons investigation to a homicide inquiry. Suspicion fell upon Yoo, who provided conflicting information to law enforcement. He initially claimed to have seen Owens and Bull leave in a black Dodge on the morning of February 26, but could offer no further details about the vehicle, which was strange for a man with a background as a mechanic. A search of the home Yoo shared with the victims uncovered disturbing evidence, including spots of what was presumed to be human blood on a wall and ceiling.
The grim discovery of the men's bodies on March 22 confirmed the community's worst fears. An investigation revealed that both Owens and Bull had died from gunshot wounds. Ballistic analysis connected bullets and fragments recovered from the victims to a gun owned by Yoo. Further cell phone data placed Yoo in the remote desert area where the bodies were ultimately found.
Charles Yoo was arrested and initially charged with obstruction of justice before the charges were elevated to two counts of aggravated murder. Later, two counts of abuse or desecration of a human body were added. In a turn of events in September 2025, Yoo pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated murder. In his plea statement, he admitted to shooting and killing both Christopher Owens and William Bull, then placing their bodies in military-style tote containers and hiding them in the desert in an attempt to conceal his crimes.
