On January 15, 2017, Ryne Zahner, a 26-year-old math teacher at Mesa High School, was fatally shot in the backyard of his Tempe home. The incident occurred in the early morning hours when Zahner was in his yard catching up with a friend, who was also the younger brother of the perpetrator, Caleb Bartels.
