In the early morning hours of January 15, 2017, the life of 26-year-old Ryne Zahner, a beloved male math teacher at Mesa High School, was tragically cut short in the backyard of his Tempe, Arizona, home. Zahner was enjoying a conversation with a friend by a fire pit when an intruder, identified as his former friend and roommate Caleb Bartels, appeared and opened fire. Zahner was struck by multiple bullets from an automatic rifle and died at the scene.

The friend who was with Zahner at the time of the shooting attempted to intervene and wrestle the firearm away from Bartels but was unsuccessful and fled to call 911. This eyewitness account was crucial for investigators, who quickly identified Bartels as the primary suspect. A manhunt ensued, as authorities believed Bartels had fled the state. He was considered armed and dangerous.

A week after the shooting, on January 22, 2017, Caleb Bartels was apprehended near the California-Nevada border. The arrest was made after an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer recognized Bartels from the description that had been widely circulated. A search of Bartels' vehicle uncovered receipts for the rifle and ammunition that matched the shell casings found at the crime scene, further solidifying the case against him.

In April 2019, a jury found Caleb Bartels guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and burglary. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, with an additional 15 years for the assault and 7.5 years for the burglary. The motive for the senseless act of violence against a man described as an inspiration to his students and a loving friend and family member remained a focal point of the investigation and trial.
