A promising life was tragically cut short on a Friday evening in Tempe, Arizona, marking a violent end to what began as a simple dispute between drivers. Agamyrat Agambayev, a 29-year-old male immigrant from Turkmenistan, was fatally shot on March 11, 2022, near the intersection of Kyrene and Guadalupe roads. He was a man on the cusp of realizing significant dreams, a doctoral student at Arizona State University who had recently accepted a position as an engineer with Intel.
The incident
unfolded around 5:30 p.m. when an argument escalated between Agambayev and another driver. The other driver, identified as 26-year-old Anthony Andrew King, exited his vehicle and fired into Agambayev's car, inflicting the fatal wound. A Tempe police officer, initially believing the scene to be a car crash, arrived moments later. King then opened fire on the officer, who was uninjured and did not return fire. A foot pursuit ensued through the parking lot of a nearby park.
During his attempt to flee, King tried to carjack another vehicle but was unsuccessful. His flight from the law was short-lived, however, as he eventually surrendered to the authorities. He was subsequently arrested and booked into jail, with his bond set at $2 million.
