On a summer evening in Omaha, Nebraska, the life of 23-year-old Hispanic male Franco Gonzalez-Mendez was tragically cut short. On July 15, 2018, just before 11:30 p.m., gunshots shattered the night air in south Omaha, an event that would leave one brother dead and another wounded. Franco and his brother, Edgar Gonzalez-Mendez, were near the Guaca Maya restaurant when the shooting occurred.
Two off-duty police officers, who were working at the restaurant, heard the shots and discovered the two victims just north of the establishment. Franco Gonzalez-Mendez succumbed to his injuries, while his brother was wounded in the attack.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to a suspect. Anthony Sanchez, who was 20 years old at the time, was arrested in Crete, Nebraska, in connection with the fatal shooting. The motive for the incident was not immediately made public. Following his arrest, Sanchez faced serious charges for his alleged involvement in the violent encounter that ended a young man's life and injured his brother.
In January 2019, Anthony Sanchez appeared in court, where a judge ordered him to be held without bond.
