Richard E. Baumgartner, a 22-year-old from Hayden, Idaho, was found dead in a parking lot near North Third Street and East Indiana Avenue in Coeur d'Alene in the early morning hours of December 13, 2015. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Initially, the Coeur d'Alene Police Department investigated the case as a homicide. However, after an extensive investigation, they concluded that the shooting was most likely accidental and self-inflicted.
