On a tragic day in Bedford, New Hampshire, six-year-old Elizabeth Obukhov, a young White female, lost her life in a devastating event that also claimed her older sister. On March 28, 2015, Elizabeth and her eight-year-old sister, Katherine, were found deceased in their home on McAfee Farm Road. The discovery was made by their father, Alexi Obukhov, who had come to the residence that morning to oversee repairs.
Upon finding his daughters and his estranged wife, Nina Obukhov, he made a frantic 911 call, exclaiming that his wife had shot their children and herself.
Responding officers secured the scene and found a heartbreaking tableau inside. Elizabeth was discovered in her bed, having sustained a single gunshot wound to the head. Her mother, Nina, was found slumped over the same bed. In an adjacent bedroom, Katherine was found, also in her bed, having died from a similar wound. Investigators later located a handwritten note in Russian, believed to have been written by Nina Obukhov, which seemed to allude to the tragic outcome. An autopsy confirmed that both Elizabeth and her sister's deaths were homicides, each caused by a gunshot wound to the head.
The ensuing investigation by the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office concluded that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide. The evidence indicated that Nina Obukhov, 34, shot and killed both of her daughters before turning the gun on herself. The investigation delved into the family's history, revealing a tumultuous relationship between Nina and Alexi Obukhov, including a prior domestic disturbance call to the residence. Friends and family of Nina reported that she had been dealing with depression and was facing marital difficulties. As the perpetrator was also deceased, no arrests were made, and the case was closed. The community mourned the loss of the two young girls, with a candlelight vigil held in their memory.
