Frank Clearwater, a 47-year-old man of Cherokee and Apache descent, was fatally wounded during the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota. On April 17, 1973, while resting in an occupied church, Clearwater was shot in the head by a U.S. federal marshal. He succumbed to his injuries eight days later, on April 25, 1973.
